Victorian Angus stud named Champion of RASV Heifer Challenge
The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV) is pleased to announce Riga Angus, Mansfield, as the Champion of the 2013 RASV Heifer Challenge.
Riga Angus is a family business owned and operated by Ian and Vera Finger of Mansfield, Victoria. Presentation of the award took place at a Beef Week Celebratory Dinner held at Sam Miranda Winery in the King Valley.
Reserve Champion of the RASV Heifer Challenge was Yavenvale Herefords presented by James and Nicki Pearce of Adelong, New South Wales.
Ian and Vera Finger, whose champion pen included progeny from Te Mania Africa, BTMA217 and Sitz New Design 458N, were thrilled with the result.
“We are really delighted with the 10 heifers that represented our next group of breeding females,” Ms Finger said. “We tend to look for functional cattle, as well as phenotype and EBVs. Functionality really is the key to productivity in our herd.”
“The RASV Heifer Challenge is a great opportunity to get some recognition for what we are aiming to achieve,” said Ms Finger
The Beef Week Celebratory Dinner showcased the region’s finest food and beverages and included a keynote speech from Tim Hollier, Senior Specialist, Beef and Sheep, Department of Primary Industries, Victoria.
The RASV Heifer Challenge is part of the 21st Stock & Land Beef Week, at which over 200 studs were exhibited from Wednesday, 30 January to Wednesday, 6 February 2013. Entrants into the RASV Heifer Challenge were required to display pens of 10 registered heifers for judging.
RASV CEO Mr Mark O’Sullivan congratulated Riga Angus on their success.
“On behalf of the RASV, I congratulate Riga Angus being named the 2013 RASV Heifer Challenge Champion, and acknowledge the quality of heifers put forward for judging by all participants.”
“The RASV proudly supports Stock & Land Beef Week through its sponsorship of the competition, which promotes the inclusion of registered heifers in the showcase,” said Mr O’Sullivan.
The 2013 RASV Heifer Challenge received 70 entries, and offered a total prize pool of $4,500.
Stock & Land Beef Week is run by Stud Beef Victoria and provides beef producers with an unparalleled opportunity to market, showcase and select genetics for their breeding operation.
