The 25 Riverina beef cattle studs participating in the new Spring Beef Week on Tuesday August 28 contain some of the biggest names in the seedstock business.
Spring Beef Week commences on August 24 in western Victoria and ends on August 28 in the Riverina.
The Riverina studs stretch from west of Deniliquin and north to Wagga Wagga. This day covers more territory than usual with the most concentrated area running from Wagga down to Albury.
The most westerly studs are the Nullamanna and Yarram Shorthorns at Moama. Nullamanna was founded in 1972 and has been on Breedplan since 1994. The stud embarked on an ET program last year and the first calves will be on the ground before Beef Week. In another move to spread its influence, for the past two years teams have been taken to the breed's major event, the National show and sale at Dubbo.
The most easterly participant is Michael Gadd of The Glen Angus and Murray Greys at Walwa just on the Victorian side of the Murray River near the Jingellic bridge. Michael chooses to be in with the Riverina studs as he is at the end of the Holbrook to Jingellic road, home of some of the nation's high profile seedstock operations.
The Glen is famous as a foundation herd of the Murray Grey breed and to-day runs 200 Murray Grey breeders alongside 200 more recently acquired registered Angus breeders. The Glen is having its 37th annual on property sale on October 5 and the Murray Grey and Angus bulls catalogued will be available for inspection on August 28.
The Harbinson family's Dunoon Angus and Hereford herds are on the Holbrook to Jingellic road and they will be open on the same day as The Glen.
The most northerly participant is Biribu on the Sturt Highway 35 kms east of Wagga Wagga. Annette and Michael Tynan will be pleased to show visitors their Limousin, Angus and Lim-Flex cattle. Lim-Flex is a blend of Angus and Limousin.
Probably one of the largest, if not the largest displays of cattle during Spring Beef Week will be at Greg Doherty's 51 year old Tulagi Angus stud at Deniliquin. A feature will be the display of 200 cows that will be for sale through AuctionsPlus in September.
